you look at your face every day.

there's more than one way to see it.

an afternoon of art, movement, sound, and seeing.

a second look

you know your face from the mirror; flipped, posed, checked on the way out the door. other people see you across the table, mid-sentence, laughing at something you probably shouldn't.

you'll make a self-portrait from clippings, words, colors, and whatever else catches your attention. then it folds, travels, and returns to you.

no pressure

  • you don't need to draw.
  • you don't need to explain yourself.
  • you don't need to turn whatever happens into a lesson.

there will be glue sticks and a party game.

what happens

  1. 1

    arrive

a short meditation to notice your face before looking at it.

  2. 2

    move

loose and a little silly; faces included.

  3. 3

    about face

    a partner game.

  4. 4

    build

start your portrait on a prepared print of your face, using clippings, words, colors, and textures.

  5. 5

    the fold

your portrait goes out into the room and comes back.

  6. 6

    sound

we'll make some noise together. not an american idol audition.

  7. 7

    the reveal

unfold your portrait as the sun goes down. keep what's yours. move what isn't. or keep all of it. frames will be available.

  8. 8

    soup and bread

together, at the table, in the twilight.

a note from andrea

after in plain sight, i keep thinking about how we see ourselves in mirrors and each other. i wanted to keep exploring that, with room to move, make something, and be a little more alive.

you don't have to show up with an issue, and i'll try not to send you home with one.

andrea

this is for you if

  • you came to in plain sight and want more.
  • you've never been and the words "glue" and "soup" got your attention.
  • you'd like to play for an afternoon.

maybe not if

you're looking for a quiet, solo afternoon. there will be movement, sound, and eye contact.

and we're making art a contact sport.

the details

bring

  • a photo of your face. you'll send it when you register; we'll print it.
  • a stack of clippings: magazines, catalogs, copies of old photos, packaging, words, textures. anything that caught your eye and you're happy to cut up. we'll have extras.
  • clothes you can move in.
